Ten Frames: What a Proof Sheet Actually Shows

Ten proofs, three finals. That is the honest arithmetic of a working session, and it is the part of photography nobody publishes.

Portfolio grids and magazine pages show finished frames. What they hide is the sheet those frames came from — the near misses, the repeated pose, the exposure that had to be walked in. This showcase shows the whole sheet on purpose.

The session

The model is Canela, photographed in the studio in July 2022. One outfit, one seamless wall, one large key light. The proofs below are unretouched — no cleanup, no color work, the test frame included.

Ten consecutive proofs, uncorrected. The first frame is the exposure test, and it stays on the sheet.

Reading the sheet

Look at the first frame, then the rest. The first is dark by more than a stop. That is not a mistake worth hiding. It is how a session starts — meter, test, correct, work.

Then watch the pose repeat. Small changes of hands, weight, and chin, frame to frame. The sheet shows the search. The final shows the find. A photographer who keeps proof sheets can trace every finished image back to the decision that produced it.

The finals

Three frames earned an edit. The rest earned the three.

The arithmetic will be similar on your sessions, and it should be. A sheet where every frame is a keeper is a session where nothing was attempted.

What to do this week

Pull the proofs from your last shoot and lay ten in a row, uncorrected. Find the test frame, the search, and the find. If you cannot tell which frame earned the edit, the edit was not earned.
